Question Title: Vestibular problemsForum: Neurology Forum
| |
I have R/R MS and my last MRI was in 3/97. I had a relapse in 9/98. Since then I have had continued balance problems and nystagmus. My physical therapist suggested there might be a vestibular problem going on. As I recall, my lesions were located in the deep frontal lobes. Would vestibular defects mean ther are lesions near the eye or ear nerves? What treatment is there or is it another thing I must learn to live with? Any information you could give me would be helpful as I see my neurologist on Monday and would like to make the most of my visit. Thanks.
= If there are vestibular problems they cannot be accounted for by the lesions in the frontal lobes since vestibular function is processed further back and lower down in the brainstem region, this would require a new lesion in this ara to explain the problem. There are a number of options, if this is an acute problem it may represent a relapse and might respond to steroids, a number of drugs are available which help to alleviate the symptoms of vestibular disease and there are specific vestibular rehabilitation exercises which may be of use in some cases. I suggest you review all of these options in detail with your neurologist when you meet next week.
