Question Title: Causes for Porphyria & Tourettes?Forum: Neurology Forum
| ||||
I have had Hereditary Coproporphyria all my life and didnt even know it until I was diagnosed at age 35! I had mild tourettes all my life and never was diagnosed until 42! However I had tics since I was 9 and seizure like attacks and more all my life from the porphyria they say. Does Porphyria and OCD cause tourettes or what? What is the link? Does this mean my two kids will get all that I have too with their HCP as they have HCP too. If they havent gotten ticks at age 17 and 15 does that mean they wont get the tourette part?(I heard tourettes develops in kids under 10 years old) Please let me know what you think.
I have reviewed the world literature going back to 1966 and no link between porphyria and tourettes has ever been established. This obviously means that your children do not have an increased risk of Tourettes as a result of the family history of porphyria. The fact that they have not developed problems at this stage makes it particularly unlikely as the disease , as you say comes on before the age of 10.
