I am a 29 year old male . I have a focal syrinx 3.8 cm on my c2-3leavle to the c4-5leavle . it was caused by a , Chiari Malformation . I would like to know what the long term progross is if I leave it alone . Now I can live with the numness and stiff right hand weakness ect. could the systoms be helped with Phyical thearipy or acupuncure . If i leave this alone will it get worse will it stay the same or reduce ? I am in stage work phyical some times how does that affect the syrinx. What am I looking at down the road. Ted Ward A syrinx in the spinal cord is not uncommonly associated with a Chiari malformation. The decision to treat a syrinx depends on the severity of symptoms. In the cervical spine patients typically present with hand weakness and a 'suspended' loss of sensation in the arms. The legs are spared until a syrinx is large. When symptoms become limiting to a patient's lifestyle, drainage may be considered. Many surgeons will first drain the cyst to see whether you improve. If you do, a shunt may be considered. Speak to a surgeon about these issues and whether surgery is in your best interest. Your general practitioner should have some good neurosurgeons for your referral. Good luck.
