Question Title: A couple questions?

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Multiple Sclerosis

Hello,
I have a couple questions that I was hoping you may help with... Can you
tell me how low doses of Neurontin can help with numbness, burning,
tingling, etc. I have just begun a low dose of Neurontin (100 mg TID)
and it seems to help by taking the edge off and helping me to focus on
things other then the constant reminder that "this is happening or ...
what's that?" The numbness is still there but... the worry is less. The
other question I have is that my eyes are getting progressively more and
more blurry, especially the right. It really doesn't seem to go away.
There is some double vision as well. I am 43 and up to about a year ago I
have had no vision problems. I have been to the eye doctor and he says
things are fine except for the need for glasses. Because of my age... is
this just a problem that develops this way with age? or can it be part of
my other issues. I'm in a wait and see mode with my Neurologist. My MRI
is clear and Lumbar puncture okay, Abnormal SSEP and continuing symptoms
since January 1998. I hope that these questions don't seem too silly and I
could ask my neurologist but I'd rather ask here. Thankyou so very much
for you time. You have been so helpful in the past.

Thanks for your question. Your current dosage of gabapentin (Neurontin) is the stardard initial dose for peripheral sensory symptoms. Some patients can have complaints of mild sedation when started on Neurontin, thus the low initial doses. Therapeutical dosages can be significantly higher - as a matter of fact daily totals of 2400-3600 mg are not unusual. Abnormal SSEP can result from different causes, and most likely your physician is concerned about a demyelinating process such as MS. Visual symptoms - both decrease in acuity and problems with eye motilitya are amongst the possible signs of MS.

I hope this information is helpful. Best of luck.
