Subject: Re: 8 year old's eye roll up involuntarily Hello, Does anyone recognize a seizure behavior where the eye's roll up involuntarily. My 8 year old daughter has experienced this for several days increasing in frequency during the day adding up to perhaps a hundred events in 12 hours. They last not much longer than the blink of an eye. I observe some (not a lot) movement of the face, so the events look more involved than just her looking up with her eyes. Both eyes go all the way up leaving mostly white with a small cresent of her retinas looking slightly crossed. We got a complete eye exam which showed everything normal. She has no previous history of neurological problems. Thank you in advance, Dan Berninger
Thanks for your question. Simultaneous forced upward gaze is a sign frequently seen during a seizure episode, and the symptoms described in your message indicated that abnormal brain activity (seizure) such definitely be included in the differential diagnosis. The associated facial movements can also be found during seizures. An electroencephalogram (EEG) would be very helpful in elucidating your daughter's clinical situation. Please mention this possibility to her pediatrician. I hope this information is helpful. Best of luck. This information is provided for general medical education purposes only. | |
