For the past several months, I have been having sporatic bilateral muscle contractions in my arms. The contractions last anywhere from thiry seconds to two minutes. I can be busy doing something, or relaxing is does not seem to matter. The contractions are painful and unpredictable. My question is, do you know of anything that would cause this type of contraction? Thank you for any insight you might be able to provide. Dear Karen, From the description of your symptoms, it sounds as if you may be having muscle cramps. Cramps usually occur during the night, after a day of strenous activity, and less often during the day. The can occur during a period of relaxation or after a strong contraction. Cramps are known to increase in frequency under certain conditions and with certain diseases. Dehydration and excercise may cause electrolyte abnormalities that predispose patients to cramps. Cramps can also occur with low thyroid states and with certain muscle diseases. I recommend getting an evaluation that includes a good physical exam and routine labs and thyroid test.
