: I have noticed in the past 3 or 4 weeks that my muscles tend to shake or tremor
when I am holding something heavy. I have not noticed any loss of strength
and I seem to have as much endurace as I always have. It also seems that
when I do work out hard or perform a lot of physical work that my muscles
ache for close to a week after. This is not normal for me. I havent noticed
any other symptoms, but I am worried that this may be something larger (aren't
we all).

Thanks in advance,

David

Dear David:

While what you complain of is probably entirely within the range of normalcy, a mild/early neurological problem is obviously possible. Conditions that can cause symptoms of your type include inflammatory or other myopathies (muscle diseases), diseases of the neuromuscular junction, anterior horn cell diseases, and even spinal cord and brain problems. Seeing a neurologist specializing in neuromuscular disorders in an referral institution would help exclude these problems, and also reassure you.
In case you live in the Cleveland area, you are welcome to see one of the neuromuscular specialists at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Mitsumoto, Dr. Shields, Dr. Levin, Dr. Pioro, and Dr. Wilbourn are renowned nationally and internationally for the work in this subspeciality of neurology. The number to call for appointments is (216)444-5559, or (800)223-2273 toll free.
I wish you the best of luck.
