Question Title: Japanese B Encephalitis (Aftermath)Forum: Neurology Forum
| |
My nephew, Russell, aged 2 contacted JE virus and was in ICU for a week. He just woke up but he doesn't seems to know anyone ! I understand he was put into some kind of coma to protect the brain from further damage from JE. Could you please tell what kind of short and long term symptoms will Thank you Rico P.S. There is currently an unreported outbreak of JE in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
= Dear Rico: The JE virus causes a serious encephalitis, specially in children, with a high frequence of permanent neurological residues or damage. The fact that Russell has woken up in a week is a good sign. It is very difficult to predict long term outcome on the basis of such an early assessment. Improvement continues for months and even years. The nervous system of children has tremendous resilience and they do even better than adults. This should give you hope. One possible serious outcome can be a tendency to have recurrent seizures in the future. Others include varying degrees of cognitive/learning difficulties, motor troubles, disorders of communication, and dificitis in vision and hearing.
