Question Title: ALS and CK level

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS - ALS

I have had various neurological problems for years such as fasiculations
and muscle tightness with negative EMG's. Recently my doc did some
blood work and said that my "CK" level was 120 and that was excellent.
He said that patients with ALS have elevated CK levels. He is a GP.
How true is this?

=
40-50% of patients with ALS have elevated levels of CK, so there is
therefore an association. Since the other 50% of patients with ALS
have normal CK levels it cannot be reliably quoted as a marker for
the disease.
