Question Title: Lost of visionForum: Neurology Forum

Hi, I am an 18-year-old girl who realized this Saturday night that my vision in my left eye is completely blurry. I can distinguish large object like furniture, body parts, computers etc... (but I see them blurry) However, my vision is so bad that I am completely unable to read anything from my left eye and I have notice that if I look at someone's face, the left side of their face is a lot less clearer than their right side. My left eye however stayed the same. Here is more information: - I do not have any diseases or symptoms of sickness - However, I am however always EXTREMELY tired (but it can maybe explain by the fact that I really do not get a lot of sleep) - I am also always thirsty and hot - Yesterday (Monday) I asked the hospital to check me for diabetes. That morning, they took a little bit of my blood and tested my blood sugar. My blood sugar was 3 and they said that diabetes usually have a lot higher if they eat breakfast (I had eaten a corn flakes cereal, a muffin, a yoghurt and orange juice) so they didn't do other tests. - They took my pressure and checked my heart and said that I was healthy - I then (still yesterday) went to see an ophthalmologist who looked at my eyes and I did a visual field test and another one where you look at coloured numbers mixed with different colours. He could not find anything but said that it was URGENT that I was seen by a neurologist. - I should mention that I have been wearing contact lenses (colour enhancers from Wesley Jenssen) for three months now but the ophthalmologist said that my eyes were not scratch or anything. - I have been checked for my eyes three months ago and both of my eyes were at -2.50 (and I saw perfectly well with that prescription)…now my left eyes is totally blurred and I cannot see anything clearly with it. - With contact lenses or glasses, my left eye is a little bit clearer but it changes ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the fact that that everything is blurry. In addition, I should mention that it makes no differences if I bring the page closer or if it is far away. Everything still stays blurry and I cannot see better. - It has been a month since I noticed that my vision had dropped a little but I thought it was my overall vision that was dropping. I am a university student and I never took time to see if it really was just in one eye or not. However, on Saturday, I saw a big change. I closed my right eye and looked only with my left eye I freaked out because I saw everything extremely blurry. - I should add that sometimes when I move my left eye (or sometimes when I touch it or close it) I sense an uncomfortable sensation (that cannot be called pain). - Other than that small sensation, I have no pain in the eye and no headache or migraine. I am desperately waiting for your expertise and I am thanking you in advance! Mary
Dear Mary, I agree with your ophtalmologist that you should see a neurologist soon. Blurred vision in one eye can have many causes, but if the ophtalmologist couldn't see anything wrong, this means that the problem is probably not in the eye, but most likely in the nervous system. The first diagnosis that comes to mind in your case is optic neuritis, which is an acute inflammation of the optic nerve. Optic neuritis produces blurred vision, sometimes associated with pain around or behind the eye. The loss of vision is usually reversible, but when it is severe, it is usually treated as early as possible with steroids, to enhance recovery. Optic neuritis can be an isolated event, but it is also sometimes associated with more diffuse inflammation within the nervous system, even if you don't have any other symptoms. The first step is to see a neurologist, who will discuss the diagnosis of optic neuritis, and may order other tests, such as an MRI of the brain, if necessary. I wish you good luck.
