: Dr., I posted this in the general forum and they told me to post it in the Neurology forum. To fill you in a bit, my nieces 1st pregnancy ended at 5 1/2 mos. when her son was born (induced) with severe spina bifida. He had no skull to cover his brain. He had webbed feet and hands, cleft palet & hare-lip which were quite visible at birth. As for the autopsy, I do not know if anything else was found. Please note that my nieces younger brother was also born with spina-bifida and has had many surgeries all his life. He is currently 18 & is considered disabled but does quite well considering his physical limitations.

After waiting the minimum time requested by her dr., she got pregnant again and gave birth to a 7lb 10oz baby boy which she almost lost. She had High blood pressure and problems which caused her to spend her last two weeks in and out of ICU in the hospital before giving birth 3-6 weeks early (they weren't sure). She had to be induced due to complications. The dr. stated that we were within minutes of loosing him. He was born limp, not breathing and took a bit of coaxing to come to. Please note that pre-eclampsia also added problems at this birth. Anyway, his breathing was kinda labored but they could find no problem. You could hear him breating accross the room. They said it was probably due to meds given to mom. They released him on day 2 to go home. Babys Dad got chicken pox when baby was 2-3 weeks old. When baby was 6 weeks old he had SHINGLES. It was from his fingers, palm of hand, up the arm to the shoulder. Also born with Thrush which was very hard to get rid of. Carried it for many months. Coloic & constipation continued and has calmed down some but still exists. He eats well, looks good, reaches, hold toys, recognizes individual people, laughs, & is really a happy baby especially considering what he has gone through but now for my concern. At 8 mos., his little back is still very very weak. When held against your chest, his back is very curved and he's rolled forward into a ball. He can't sit in a high chair because his mom says his back gets too tired. When sitting on the floor, his little shoulders almost touch his knees because of the forward position into a roll. When you try to stand him in your lap, he pulls his feet up under himself. He has never been one to try to stand at all. Not even with help. This week he finally started to scoot a little bit but he lays on his tummy and pushes with his feet. This does not seem normal to me. I've been around many many babies and I'm afraid something is wrong. Also, I forgot but the last couple of months, he sleeps with his eyes open. Just the fact of the dryness to his eyes alone tell me something needs to be done about that. It's scarey when he sleeeps because he looks dead. He is lifeless looking with his eyes open. I want to keep shaking him or touching him to be sure that he will move. Could these 2 symptoms be connected? I need some answers quick. I don't want to worry the parents un-necessarily but feel that if there is a problem, the sooner help is given, the better off this little youngster will be. Thank you so much for your input. I just can't talk to them about my fears unless there is really something to worry about. PLEASE PLEASE HELP! Thanks again, Cyndi

Sorry for the delay in your answer. Certainly it sounds from the description you give that the child is
having problems with motor (strength) and if this is real needs to be evaluated further. If the parents are not
concerned then it puts you in an awkward position. Does the child see a pediatrician? That would be the first place
to start and if they were concerned a pediatric neurology referal would be reasonable. It sounds as if he is having
proximal muscle weakness. It is hard to say if you are over reacting or there is a true problem. If the parents are concerned
then have the child examined.
