: One of my neighbors had a stroke two days ago and he is in hospital in deep coma. The doctors say one of his arteries bursted and the blood leaked. His condition was stable until the doctors stopped his medicine that were supposed to make him asleep. When they did it the pressure in his head raised and they also got to a conclusion that he is paralised in his left side. Currently his situation is again stable and the doctors are arguing when and where to do the surgery to "fix" the torn artery. Do you have any suggestions what steps are needed to be taken so he will recover and what chances does he have to recover? _

Dear Asaf,What you are describing is likely an aneurysm in your neighbor's head. An aneurysm is an abnormal bulging of a blood vessel that is weaker than the normal vessel, and therefore at risk to bleed. An aneurysm that bleeds in the head is a life threatening condition. The best way to treat these is to physically place a clip on the neck of the aneurysm to prevent it from bleeding further. In recent years, we have been able, via catheters placed in the groin, place small metal coils in certain aneurysms with good results. Whether or not your friend will improve from the stroke cannot be determined from the information given. Often patients will improve remarkably over time in spite of what initially seems a severe deficit. You should speak to your friend's physician as to the best option for treatment and recovery. He will be able to answer your questions more specifically. Good luck.
