: Im dealing with an L5-S1 lumbar disk herniation, with radiculopathy down middle of left butt area.
After 4 mos of conservative tx (PT), I am seeking a neurosurgery consult from a local doc.

Im curious, as I dont know his philosophy. What your thoughts are on

1.recovery issues.
ie. when to start exercising again (walking, light weights, machines), swimming.
and

2. how long is one usually out of work after such a surgery.

I am very active.. completely believe in PT. and would like to get moving as soon as possible, But knowing myself dont want to push it and start too soon
Thanks
Tom

Dear Tom,

At our institution patients may begin walking the day of surgery. Some patients
may take a bit longer due to numbness or weakness, but most can walk the same
day and go home the next. This would have been unheard of twenty years ago.
We generally tell patients to take it easy for six weeks before returning to
any form of strenuous exercise. Physical therapy, if necessary due to a patient's
neurological status, is also recommended.

When to return to work depends on the type of work a patient does. Generally
a patient's body will tell them if they are overexerting themselves. Clearly
a construction laborer should stay away from work for a month or so, but a
person at a desk job may be able to return immediately.

Speak to your surgeon about his particular recommendations after surgery.

Good luck.
