: Just under two years ago I began to experience numbness in my right foot. I assumed it was due to my back. I had back trouble for some time. Eventually the numbness moved to my hands. Since that time I have had just about every test possible (Spinal tap, brain scan, heavy metals, sexually transmitted diseases, lyme disease, dozens of blood tests. The most recent test was specifically for lupus. My symptoms at the time support this. I had a rash on the bridge of my nose and on my cheeks. I also had painless blisters in my mouth. These have disappeared.

For more than six months, I have had unbelievable pain in my feet. The sensation feels like I am standing on a road in the middle of the summer. I also have pain in my hands and some sensations in my mouth. The pain is symetric. I am trying to get an idea if these symptoms are neurological in nature. Due to the pain, I am prepared to go anywhere to try and identify the problem. In addition to the previous question I am trying to find the best place to go for neurological problems. Is there a particular institution (e.g. Clevland Clinic) that would offer me the best chance at diagnosing my problem?

Dear Michael,

Your symptoms are suggestive of a peripheral neuropathy. The symptoms can present with numbness, tingling, altered pain sensation usually beginning in the feet and progressing up the legs. Once the symptoms reach mid calf toward the knee, the hands become involved. There are multiple reasons for this disorder, including lupus (and it sounds as if you may have had alot of them ruled out with your prior work-up). Some tests that you did not have listed but may be helpful include EMG and nerve biopsy (and if you have not already, a work-up to excluded lupus should be initiated). If you are interested in getting an evaluation at CCF by a neurologist specifically trained in nerve disorders (Dr. Sheilds, Dr. Levin) call 1-800-CCF-CARE, ask for the neurology appointments secretary.
