: I have face pain for 16 yrs. and have been to many doctors and been on many meds.
I think it started with a tooth extraction which damaged the nerve and then has spread farer up my face as the yrs.has gone on?
Now the attacks is like the muscle cramps in the face from the nose across the face, once a day for about 2 hrs.with swelling.
This lasts for a few months and goes away but during that time the pain is excruciating!! The pain is like someone closes a vise down on that side and won't let up, no jabs of pain. I have yrs.between attacks where I have no pain. The pain ia NOT in the eye. If I smile or laugh the muscle seems to want to tighten up even when not in cycle.
Is there a facial pain that involues the facial muscle on one side?
Why and What is it that the pain only comes every so often?? I am grateful for that!

If your facial pain started with a tooth extraction then it is probably
due to damage to the a branch of the trigeminal nerve, this nerve gives
sensation to the skin of one side of the face and controls the muscles
ivolved in chewing.
Damage to the nerve could cause either intermittent or continuous pain
in the area supplied by the nerve and abnormal activty of the muscles supplied
by the nerve (including cramps).
Trigeminal nerve problems can come and go without any obvious precipitating cause
and it is usually not possible to know why a particular attack occurrs.
