: I have recently been dxed. with trigeminal neuralgia. I also have a hx. of degenerative chgs. in c-spine. In 1987, had hemilaminectomy- c-5-6, with mediocre results. In 1995, MRI showed bulging disk at C-3-4, with mild stenosis, Swan neck and some compressioon at C 5-6-7, though not severe at that time. Surgery suggested was multilevel corpectoy, strut graft fusions, and Synthes plates. I wear a cervical collar prn, and take Robaxin, and duract. Could there be a relationship between the T.N. and the c-spine conditions? I have not had an MRI since 1995, and really do not understand the proposed surgery, risks vs. benefits. I am interested in your opinion, and comments regarding the surgery, what exactly it is, and if the T.N. may be associated with the neck condition. Thank you for your response..and added information.

Dear Marcia:

In some instances of c-spine disease at higher levels than yours there may be trouble with head and face pain. In your case I don not think that this is relevant especially if you have been diagnosed with TN by a qualified neurologist.

It is difficult for me to comment on the suggested operation without having had the opportunity to examine you and review your X-rays and MRI.

I do suggest that you seek multiple opinions from qualified neurosurgeons about this. If you are interested in an opinion at the Cleveland Clinic you may contact the office of Dr. Kalfas or Bingaman in the department of Neurosurgery at (216) 444-5672.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck!
