Thanks for the question. The spinal cord runs through a large central opening (spinal canal) formed by the vertebrae. Nerves branching from the spinal cord travel to your arms and other parts of your body through smaller openings called foramina in the vertebrae. In stenosis bone spurs grow into the foramen and spinal canal, narrowing the opening. The nerves and spinal canal may become irritated, resulting in pain, weakness, numbness and loss of coordination. The numbers just represent the spinal level of the abnormality. There are several treatment approaches including physical therapy, medications and surgery.
