: I am a by-pass patient (7+ years ago at age 42) who is experiencing type II cognitive symptoms (disorientation, confusion, irritability, lack of ability to concentrate, etc). I have been very glad to see recent acknowledgments of these by-pass surgery related problems as well as research in prevention methods and techniques. These activities will certainly be helpful to future patients. However, I am looking for ways to reduce the current symptoms I am experiencing. At times they are severe enough to impact my relationships with family and friends as well as job performance. Is anyone aware of any research or efforts in this area. I have discussed this with my cardio but unfortunately, this is not an area he has a great deal of experience in. Any input or comments would be appreciated. Thanks...Don = The cognitive problems you mention are an increasingly recognised feature of complex cardiac procedures, like many cognitive symptoms they can be very difficult to treat as the symptom imlpies that some nerve cells have been destroyed due to either numerous miniscule strokes during surgery or global hypoperfusion of the brain. There is however a means of maximising you current capabilitis and this is through Cognitive Rehabilitation, this is a extended treatment under the guidance of a Psychologist and is used in many patients after neurological illnesses. Should you wish to pursue this course in the Cleveland Clinic one expert in the area of Cognitive Rehabilitation is Dr Carolyn Lemsky, the number for her appointments (216)444 5812. Regardless of where you decide to obtain treatment I would strongly advise you to pursue this course as you obviuosly function at a very high level now and you should do everythig to maximise your potential. I wish you luck with the treatment.
