Question Title: Remission

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Fibromyalgia

What is your opinion on the use of Guaifenesin in FM patients to aid in remission? Also, I know someone with FM who underwent chemotherapy and was in remission for 2 1/2 years - only recently she has began to flare again. Have you heard of the use of chemo in treating FM - and what is your opinion on this?

Robyn,

Yours is one of the most creative suggested solutions for the treatment of fibromyalgia that I have heard to date. To the best of my knowledge, I am unaware of any role for chemotherapetic agents or guafenesin, an over the counter expectorant used to loosen phlegm, in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Regular aerobic exercise and low dose (pain alleviating dose) tricyclic antidepressant medications are more commonly used for treatment of this controversial syndrome. On a brighter note, guafenesin is certainly a harmless medication compared to chemotherapy agents, and is unlikely to cause any harm at least!!! Good Luck, and if you try it and it works let us know (realizing we are not recommending you doing so)!!!
