Subject: Re: Tegretol and Birth Defects I've seen information about the risk of birth defects if the mother takes Tegretol for seizures, but what if the father does? My fiancee is on 1200mg of Tegretol and we're are concerned about the risk, if any. Thanks.
Good question. The risk for birth defects in a child whose father is on tegretol is less than that if it were the mother but greater than the general population. The risk is around 2-3% for a malformation and most of those are very mild. No dietary treatment has been recommended. Good luck This information is provided for general medical education purposes only. Please consult your physicain regarding treatment and diagnostic questions. | |
