In the past 4 years I have had 2 balloon rhizotomies for TN. While they have been successfull to a point, the pain has now returned and I am wondering if I would be a candidate to have Gamma Knife surgery, as I do not want to attempt another balloon rhizotomy. I am 79 years old and in excellent health. I currently have resumed taking Tegretol and dislike the side effect of this drug, but it does not really control the pain. I would appreciate your comments.

Dear George:

Given what you have described, I do believe that you are a candidate
for Gamma Knife treatment for your trigeminal neuralgia. The treatment
is rather simple and takes a few hours. You will go home the same day and
should feel some relief within a few weeks. The Cleveland Clinic's Gamma
Knife Center has treated a large number of TN cases and if you are
interested in an opinion here you may call the office of Dr. Gene Barnett
(director of the Gamma Knife Center) at (216) 444-5672.

Good Luck!
