Question Title: Possible Psychosomatic MS Like Symptoms??

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Multiple Sclerosis

I am in the process of being worked up for MS. My Mri Scan of Brain/C-spine came back negative. My neurologist is suggesting I go see a Psychiatrist. I don't feel my range of symptoms could be psychosomatic. My neuro exams showed positive for hyperflexic through out. Plus, not to mention episodes of vertigo, nystagamus and blurred vision in one eye. I also experience problems with sense of balance and display ataxia. I have fascilations of extremities at times. Experience Lhermitte's sign when flexing neck. Could all these symptoms be Psychosomatic? I understand having a negative MRi Scan creates a bit of a delimma for my neurologist to figure out what is going on with me. I also forgot to mention that I have Chiari 1 Malformation with Cerebellar tonsils. The radiologist report says it is there but not obstructing flow. Could this cause all my problems. All these symptoms have been going on for the last 3 years with only small breaks in between episodes of attacks. I am ready to ask for refferal to your clinic out of frustration no one give me any answers. Should I just give up and learn to live with these symptoms. It is so frustrating not knowing what causing these strange symptoms. I begginning to feel like I am going crazy!
Please Help Me! Sincerely, Anneliese Reitz

With a case as difficult as yours, I think it would be wise to seek a second opinion. If travel to the Cleveland Clinic is not too much of a hardship, then I would advise getting an appointment at the Mellen Center, which is a division of the department of Neurology. There you would be seen by experts who specialize in MS, which is sometimes a difficult diagnosis to make. I can't say you do or don't have MS from the information you gave above, but there are enough symptoms that you should have an experienced individual (or group) evaluate you.

I hope this helps. The number is 800-223-2273, ask for neurology appointments and specify Mellen Center. CCF MD mdf.
