Question Title: Neurosurgery for Traumatic TN

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neuralgia

Dear C.C. Neurosurgeon. If one has experienced an injury to the TN nerve or its branches/feeders, via Dental procedure or a facial blow, would surgery like MVD or Gamma Knife be appropriate for this? Otherwords the TN pain did not start just out of the blue indicating perhaps a compression somewhere in the Skull Base. What I am trying to learn is what can help Traumatic TN Patients? Many cannot tolerate meds and want their Life Back Again. Some have had alcohol blocks and various procedures to help these nerves but many do not work and some suffer from Anethesia Dolorosa from these various procedures. ....Any info/suggestions will be greatly appreciated...Thank You. P.S. I also want to know if one who suffers from AD from one of these "fallen procedures" could any other type of surgery e.i. GK? help these folks? Thanks Again. Cecelia

Dear Cecilia:

MVD is specifically for cases where there is vascular compression of the
TN. In cases such as yours Gamma Knife radiosurgery might be an option
but the answer you get may vary from center to center. As such, I
recommend that you seek the advice of a neurosurgeon who uses the gamma
knife for treatment of TN. Neither GK or MVD is known to help with AD.

Good Luck!
