Question Title: Vision Spots after Head Injury

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neurology - General

My four year old son has been seeing bright and dark colored spots consistently for the past two weeks. He sees many spots at one time. All the colors of the rainbow. He says they are from 2 inches to 2 feet wide. He can see them with his eyes closed.

He did fall backwards off a wagon 5 weeks ago and hit the back of his head on the sidewalk. He complained of increasing head pain an hour later and I took him to the emergency room. He vomited twice at the hospital and once at home that night. The emergency room doctor examined him and said he was fine and did not require a CT.

We took him to our pediatrician 10 days after the accident and the doctor said he was fine.

Our family also had a new addition, a baby girl, 6 weeks ago. This is our second child. We thought the spots might be a psychological reaction to this new member of our family.

We are planning on taking him back to our pediatrician this week with the new symptom (spots) and get a referral to a neuro-ophthalmologist, neurologist, or an ophthalmologist.

Have you ever heard of this? Thanks for your consideration.

Dear Ed:

It is not unusual to have symptoms similar to the ones that you describe,
after a traumatic event such as the one you describe.
Typically these symptoms occur much sooner after the event. These problems
tend to be self-limiting and do not require much treatment.
I think given that your son did not have a CT scan at the time, it would
not hurt to have him seen by a neurologist. I do however think that
everything will be OK and hopefully not require any further intervention.

Good Luck!
