Question Title: Ritalin and Alopecia

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Attention Deficit

My grandson was diagnosed with ADD about 4-5 yrs ago and was put on Ritalin. In the last few weeks, we have noticed a place on the back of his head (hairline) that is losing hair. His hairline has become very uneven. I believe this could be coming from the long term Ritalin. I read somewhere that it could cause alopecia. Dr. has taken him off Ritalin and put him on Luvox. Wonder if anyone knows if hair will come back in this area.

Wish I could be more help. The PDR does list scalp hair loss as a rare finding but I have never seen this. Certainly the best chance to restore the hair loss is discintinuation of the medication. Other causes of hair loss, however, should also be investigated. I could contact the company who manufacture ritalin. They are often helpful in providing such information. Good luck
