Question Title: Guyan's Canal Surgery

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neurology - General

How long does it take for your hand to heal after receiving a guyan's canal release. I don't mean the scar itself, but the "hypersensitivity" one has after surger. It has been 1 year now from my surgery and it still is an unwelcomed feeling. It seems when I take Valium the irritation goes away, if this makes any sense at all. Thanks Dave

Hello Dave!

Twinges of pain can occur while an incision is healing and in rare instances can persist for months or years, since some of the small nerve endings are necessarily cut in half by the incision making process. Scar tissue that irritates the original nerve being operated on may also result in persistent uncomfortable sensations. Whether the nerve adequately or fully heals or not can take up to 24 months to determine. An EMG is a test that can detect ongoing, active damage to nerves including those not healing properly, but will not detect damaged small nerves in the skin divided by an incision. Benzodiazepine type medications like Valium may nonspecifically depress nerve impulse transmissions all over, including in the brain, and in my personal opinion have no legitimate role in the treatment of discomfort such as that you describe, as they are potentially addicting.
