Question Title: Is This Dysthesia?/ Cranial/Cervical Problems?

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neuralgia

Dear doctor, I need your help! I have had all these weird feelings/pains on the left side of my face since dental work over two years ago. I have seen many neurologists and DDS and had an MRIof Brain. No answers and I am dismissed. My pains are like creepy lil things crawling, aching, pulling sensations, tightness from my left temple down to the left side of neck and throat and into the left chin area. I can also feel strange feelings/tightness in the left throat area and the back of my lower head on that side. There is also feelings and at times a sharp pain in the deep left ear and a constant buzzing. Turning head and bending over, taking a deep breath can cause added feelings in the left side of my throat/neck and at times it seems to restrict the swallowing...Only on that side. .Reading this site over the last six months I thought I had Anethesia Dolorosa but an AD lady told me today that I sound more like Dythesia (hope I spelled this correctly) because I am not numb! I never had these symptoms until that root canal. The DDS did this because I was having some jabs in that molar which we later found out most of been referred pain from another tooth because I got no relief from those throbbings even with the root canal. These throbs were tolerable. Had both molars pulled and I still throbbed on and off but these throbs are nothing compared to this constant awful painful left sided problem!. Does any of this sound familiar to you, Doctor? How can I get truly diagnosed correctly? Injections? Two years ago, My DDS gave me tegrotol but I broke out in a rash after 3 days. (no relief in that short of time) Neurontin after 5 days did nothing for the left sided constant pain. This has taken a real toll on my life. I do not know where to go or where to turn to. I live many many miles from your Site...What would you suggest? Have you seen me out there before? Thank You, doctor. Lena. P.S. I also had an MRI of the Cervcial. Only showed a small bulge in the C-4/5 area.. Am not seeing anyone now and am living in this constant pain taking nothing but saying many prayers for a "miracle"

Hard to say exactly what is going on. This could be a variant of trigeminal neuralgia or atypical facial pain.

The term "dysesthesia" is a generic one, referring only to the mis-sense of sensation when you touch something. That is, soft feels like prickly, and so forth. It is not the name of a disease or syndrome, but rather a symptom. Could be from nerve damage or other causes, and can happen anywhere in the body.

You may need to have a second opinion. I would call 800 223 2273 and ask for neurology appointments (4-5559) and tell them you want the headache clinic. I hope someone there may be able to make a good start helping you.
