Question Title: Leg Dysfunction w/ Leg and Back PainForum: Neurology Forum
| ||||
Dr. Kalfas and CCF Staff: I think I last wrote to you in February regarding our 17-year-old daughter, Lindsay. She had suffered an injury in cheerleading which eventually resulted in her left leg completely shutting down. She spent a week in Children's Memorial here in Chicago, but her condition didn't change (November 1997), and they were unable to pinpoint her problem even after countless tests. In fact, her condition remained unchanged until February of this year. It was as if her leg, from the hip down, was "asleep." She also suffered from back and leg pain typical of sciatica. In February we took her to the University of Chicago Hospital. There she was diagnosed by Dr. Peter Huttenlocher as having RSD and Conversion Disorder. He put her on a 50mg dose of amitriptyline, which knocked her out such that she virtually slept for two days straight. The dose was reduced to 25mg, but within a week her pain was gone and her muscles started to work again in her leg. I am pleased to say that this past Wednesday she tried out for, and made, the Illinois State Allstar Cheerleading Team. Her recovery has been, needless to say, 100%. We are obviously thankful for her recovery, and want to thank you for your quick and informative communications. I sent you several messages during her ordeal, and always heard back within 48 hours. Very reassuring during a tough time. I know you guys often deal with very difficult cases, many of which don't have a good outlook. Well, this one has a happy ending, and I thought you'd like to know. Thanks again - John Gibson = I just made a hard copy of this posting and forwarded it via inter-office mail to Dr Kalfas. Thanks for the kind words. CCF MD mdf.
