Question Title: speech difficulty

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Speech

Friends and family have noticed a slurring to my husbands speech over the past several months. It is not a consistent slurring, but occurs in general conversation. He, too has noticed it. I have talked to some people and they feel this may be cause for concern. He does not appear to have any difficulty with his hearing and the articulation difficulty is not sound specific. What could be causing this problem and should we pursue some testing? Thanks for any replies.

Dear L,

There are a number causes for new onset slurred speech in a patient. The biggest
concern is that your husband may have had a small stroke. Other considerations
may be tumors and a host other insults. Your husband needs to have a complete
evaluation and checkup to be sure.

Your general practitioner should be well-versed in the risk factors and treatments
for stroke and can offer referrals to other specialists if necessary. Regardless,
you should definitely get it checked out.

Good luck.
