Question Title: cervical fusion related pain

involved in traffic accident 9-20-94 had 18mos. of physical therapy (no help). had surgery 6-95 cervical fusion c-4-5-6 with plate installed. now 1998 and am still having pain in right trapezius area along with cramps .cramps are sometimes mild at other times severe. my physician also says that arthritis is starting to set in . i also have knots appear in the trapezius muscle along with the cramps. any suggestion on possible further treatment? thank you in advance.

I recommend the following:

1. Get evaulated by a good neurologist with expertise in neuromuscular disorders and EMGs at an academic neurology department near you to look for the possibility of an active nerve root compression, which may potentially require specific local measures (mainly surgery).

2. If evaluation 1. is a negative or shows insignificant root involvement, consider getting an evaluation and treatment from a chronic pain management program. It often helps.
