Question Title: atrophy?

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neurology - General

I posted earlier on 9/19/98 about colorblindness,. etc., and I have one more question.

After the numbness and tingling started, my feet changed. They appear to have lost tissue on the dorsum above the metatarsals distally, mostly the third and fourth. The left foot is worse than the right. The foot is indented in that area, and the tendons stick out. Is this atrophy, are my feet going flat, or am I just getting old (I am 35)?

Thank you for all of your help.

To really know the answer to that, you'd have to be examined. Offhand, I would say it's atrophy just because of the way you described it. I didn't see your original post, so can't put it together with your other symptoms. But if you had tingling there I wonder if you had some sort of neuropathy (sensory and motor components).

Ahem, 35 ain't old.

If you are found to have a neuropathy (interview, examination, EMG/NCS testing by your neurologist), then the question is why? There are hereditary forms and I suppose you could still be young enough to have one of those, if there is a clear family history. There are certain auto-immune and inflammatory diseases which produce neuropathies, and that should be looked into. Does the colorblindness provide a clue? I don't know (sorry, I didn't read the prior post).

If this seems like an appropriate avenue of investigation, you may wish to consult with a neuromuscular specialist. That is a neurologist who focuses on disorders of muscles and nerves. Most neurologists (like me) can suspect or discover the presence of a neuropathy. Getting the diagnosis of what caused the neuropathy sometimes requires an expert.

I hope this helps. CCF MD mdf.
