Question Title: Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neuralgia

My husband has been "tentatively" diagnosed with glossopharyngeal neuralgia by two ENT's. His pain tends to last several hours rather than the "few seconds to several minutes" that I've read information on. I would like to know what can be done to confirm that diagnosis.

Dear Jennifer,

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a stabbing pain that is localized to the tongue or throat. Occasionaly, the pain may radiate to the jaw or ear. The pain can be triggered by coughing, sneezing or swallowing. The clinical history is important for the diagnosis. Also, temporary blocking of the pain after anesthetizing the tonsils and back of the throat with 10% lidiocaine can be diagnostic. Discuss this option with your doctor. If you are interested in getting an evaluation at CCF call, 1-800-CCF-CARE. Good Luck.
