Question Title: 3year old with multiple seizures

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Epilepsy

my son has recently(since thanksgiving )started having seizures. he has tonic-clonic, absent, myclonic and atonic seizures. last monday he had three tonic-clonic seizures and the last one we had to take him to the emergency room because he would not come out of it. this one lasted 2 hours before they could get him out of it.since then he has myclonic seizure and atonic seizures almost every 5 minutes although yesterday they slowed way down he is still having them. we are on our second neurologist. weleft the first one some 3 months ago but they lost all of his records from the first place(and tests)he is on dilantin total of 150mg and depakene 675 mg a day( the depakene was just increase a day and half ago from from 450 to 675) do you think the myclonic seizures will go away from the depakene increase and do you is there any specilized hospitals and researc centers in north carolina or south carolina. thank you tom

Hi Tom,
It is really not possible to predict from the information available whether
the increase in Depakene will work in your son's case, if it doesn't the drug
Klonepin may be useful specifically for the myoclonic seizures.
It sound like this child has a very difficult epilepsy problem and you reall y
need to be in touch with a specialized center, you are very lucky in The North
Carolina area to have the Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem, this is
a renowned center for Epilepsy treatment, this is based in The Baptist Hospital
in Winston-Salem and I would strongly reccomend that you look for a
neurologist there. Don't give up hope, there are other options you can try
including the ketogenic diet and some newer drugs
