Question Title: Back Pain, Bulging Disc, L4-L5

Forum: Neurology Forum
Topic: Neurosurgery - General

A recent MRI by my neurosurgeon demonstrated spinal narrowing at the L4-5 level. This is from a combination of factors including a bulging disc at this level, enlargement of the joints on that side of the spine, as well as ligament enlargement.
The neurosurgeon has recommended conservative treatment. A prescription for Feldene was given and avoidance of heavy lifting, repetitive twisting, bending, or stooping for seven weeks is necessary.
I am extremely active and enjoy golf, jogging, in-line skating, working out, etc. I started the Feldene and elimination of all the above Oct 5th. Since that time the pain has increased and I'm miserable, being limited to walking only. Is there any excerise I can do to help?
The neurosurgeon will evaluate my situation again on Nov 23.

Dear Trena:

Sometimes exercises are recommended for abdominal muscle strengthening in cases like yours; this consists of leg lifts while lying flat
on your back, usually starting with a small number of repititions at first and
working up from there. 2-3 sets per day is usually adequate in the beginning. The objective here is to relieve weight-bearing stresses from
your lumbar spine (by having strong abdominal muscles, you tend to distribute the load more anteriorly, and thus avoid worsening your back
problem). Since you are already physically fit, this may be less applicable
to you.

I would consult your Neurosurgeon prior to initiating any new exercises, as
he/she knows you better than I do. I hope this was helpful....Good luck.
