Dizziness

by CGTMHI, Jan 24, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Doctors,

First, thank you, thank you, thank you! for this wonderful forum!

My husband, Frank has been experiencing intermittent dizziness.  The dizziness usually occurs when he moves his head from one side to another (as in changing positions in bed) or if he puts his head way back and then brings it forward slowly. The only illness he has had recently was the flu, but all symptoms have disappeared from that.  In addition, he has an implanted defibrillator due to Ventricular Tachycardia he experienced after a heart attack six years ago.

Do you think his dizziness is a neurological symptom, or should we be considering some other medical area?

Thank you...

Kathy

Dear Kathy:

I most likely etiology of your husband's vertigo is post-flu: benign postural vertigo.  Although other things may be the cause they are unlikely, except for something from the heart.  I would see a neurologist just to make sure that the heart didn't do something funky and cause problems.  But, you description sounds like BPV.

Sincerely,
