Blood clotting problems

by Kathy, Feb 15, 2000 12:00AM
I am having a Bone tumor removed from my skull.  I have had numerous blood clotting problems in the past (pulmanary embolism, mild stoke) from a D&C.  When the issue came up with my surgeon, he mentioned if I am on a anti coagulation therapy there is a risk of "bleeding into my spine" What does this mean and what are the after effects if this happens

Dear Kathy:

Usually, what happens is that the anticoagulation is stopped for the surgery and then resumed after surgery is finished.  Some of this depends on what anticoagulant therapy your on.  If you are on coumadin, they will switch you to heparin and then back to coumadin.  You really need to talk to the surgeon as he knows exactly what your coagulation problem is about.  I think he was explaining the risks that you have and not necessarily that this will happen.  There is always a risk of bleeding.  Your risk is just alittle higher.  Good care and careful following during and after the surgery will likely prevent any untoward bleeding.  But, if your really concerned, get a second opinion about your bleeding risks.

Sincerely,
