Left-sided pain

by Larry, Mar 13, 2000 12:00AM
I have been under a physician's care for the past five months.

I am now waiting for an appt. with the Mayo Clinic in Minn.

About twice a week I have these attacks on my left side of my

chest area which last one or two days.  The pain can be anywhere

from mild to excruciating.  I am currently on pain medication.

It starts near my sternum and runs along the bottom of my ribcage

and goes around to the middle of my back. I have this deep and

painful burning sensation which also runs up into my left arm

pit.  When the pain is severe I have this adhesion which pops out

and runs up my chest about four inches.  A local general surgeon

looked at it and said it was a lymphatic adhesion and would go

away. There should be nothing to worry about.  But this adhesion

keeps popping up when my attacks appear and is now very painful.

The middle of my back has become sore and ache down along my spine.  Over a year ago, I had foot surgery and had two neuromas

removed from my foot.  Is it possible that these neuromas can

also appear in other areas of the body?  In the meantime, is

there anything I can do or take to help these attacks while I am

waiting on Mayo? My medication is Ultram 50mg once every four hours. Thanks for listening and any advice would be helpful!

Dear Larry:

Do you have Neurofibromatosis?  Yes, neurofibromas can occur any where in the body.  Your case sounds interesting, I'm not sure what you may have, unless it is NF-1.  Yes, there are other medications you can take, one is neurontin, another is tegratol.

Sincerely,

I have the SAME exact thing except it is on the right side.  As stated it sounds exactly the same except my pain is on the right side and feels like someone punched me in my back.  My right hand is always ice cold to touch and slightly discolored (purple) I have been diagnosed with fibromylagia but believe it is something else.  Good luck!

I also have a metallic taste in my mouth, numbness and swelling

in my feet.  I "hear" my neck and spine crack.  I get blurred vsion and "trails" followed by problems with depth perception.  I do have a kazillion swollen lymph nodes throughout my system.  I am a balanced person with minimal stress in my life. I have read throughout the postings.  What would cause my hand to be so ice cold? I have a cruddy PCP and am changing Drs 1 Apr, the symptons are getting scary - though I try to ignore them and just hope it all goes away.  Sorry to rattle on.

This is for Larry.   I just came from Mayo Clinic.  I, like you, was waiting for months to get in.  I am not saying they are not good.  They could not help me.  But they are the number one neurological center in the world I guess.  They are very good with many disorders.  If you feel they let you down go somewhere else.  I am trying to find somewhere that can help me.   My situtaion is very complicated.  I went through a windshield 27 years ago.  I have thousands of nerves that were severed when I was 17.  My gripe is that I didn't even get to see a nuerologist.  I was referred to a Dr. Reid who is a pain specialist.  He told me nothing would help me except a pain clinic.  I told him I responded to Tegratol and MS Contin ...I could not take Dylantin and Neurontin ... and when I was pregnant I went off Depakote and amytripptoline [sp].  He told me if I could not take the medication I must go to a pain clinic.  The pain responded to tegratol and ms contin{morphine}.

He did not listen very well to me.  I was allergic to them.  I wanted to be tried on something else.  He told me the pain clinic would try me on meds.   The pain clinic told me they take patients off meds.  I AM VERY CONFUSED.  I am in so much face and head pain I can't even take care of my 22 month old son.  His daddy has him ... but my daughter who is 18 took off on me cause I was crying all the time.  I pray every day for an answer. I got to see Dr. Bruce ... I liked her ... a pain psychologist.  But I only got to see her 5 minutes.  She said she was worried about me because of my weight loss of 30 pounds ... now I weigh 106.  So she sent me to a pain psychiatrist.  I'm sorry .. I forgot his name right off hand.  I went to see him.  He looked at me and said "what are you doing here?"  I said you tell me and we'll both know.  If you want more information from me ... like where to stay etc. ... email me at

My father would always tell me "Never, never, never give up."

I pass these words along to you.

Tell Mayo clinic what you think.   You have lived in your body longer than they have.

I am from Minnesota ... and still I had a long wait because they lost all the fax materials all my Dr.s had faxed them so they lost contact of me.

I write gospel music .. I sing .. I want my life back   I have been hurting bad about 15 years.   It was numb to begin with.

Hi Larry,

In 1990 god bless me with a very good job to help take care of my 3 kids and I. Their ages were then 7,8 & 10.  I was a Production Operator making $60,000.00 when I was forced to leave in November 1996.  My job consist of heavy lifting, climbing stairs, and towers up to 100 ft up.  On day I felt in 1994 something pop in my neck I reported it they ask if there were pain I said no I am alright, but I reported it for the records if it would happen to cause problems later for me, well the Supervisor forgot to put it on paper that he assure me he would.  Now I have pain for life, I worked with pain for 2 yrs, on 11/01/96 night sjift I could not take it any longer i was rushed to the ER room. a week later I had a fusion done to my neck C-6, the MRI showed 3 ruptured disc but the Neuro would only do C-6, C-5 & C-4 the neuro did not want to deal with it because C-4 is my breathing area and he gave me a line Oh the C-5 & C-4 is not impressive enough to deal with it.  With continuos pain a year later I had a Brechial Plexis done afraid to remove the 1st rib, and still no help.  Life is very miserable for me a depression stage all type of medication from xanax, soma, serzone for depression, tylenol 4 as wellas P.T. 3 times a week. I was diagnoised with THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME know as TOS and it is with me for life no cure but high cost to just have a slight painless day.  I had chest pains like I was having a heart attack, numbness from the left side of my neck to my fingers, rotator cup in my shoulder stiffens on me hard to lift up my arm on the left side only some times on my right. the inner wall of my chest and ribs a in constant flame.  I have gone to the best in Houston Texas thinking that the Dr's here in Lake Charles, La. didn't have a clue but they all were right TOS.  No cure.  About my job I cannot have any gainfull employment ever It's with me for life.  Miss the large pay checks but they agreed to pay for my medical bill until the age of 65.  I have started a foundation for TOS patients and hope to find a cure but for now it will help them med bills, P.T., pain Mangement depression and how to cope with daily pain.  E-mail me at ***@**** or ***@****

Good luck

Bettye

I have pain that hurts on my left side from the front to the back.  At times, I have severe pain in my lower back around my tailbone.  I have been hospitalized for diverticulitis and have also had a spinal fusion from complications of scoliosis.  This pain is so severe at times that I cannot sleep on my left side. &n
