lumbar, hip and leg pain

by Karen, Apr 11, 2000 12:00AM
I am a 38 year old female. 3 months ago I went to my primary care physician because of pain very low on my back that radiates to my hips. He sent me for a R & L joint xray and said we might as well get a chest xray while I'm there, because I have had what he diagnosed as small pnuemonias over the three years I have seen him. I had never had a chest xray. The chest xray showed that I have interstitial lung diease. I saw a pulmonologist and he ran many test. PPD anergy panal, Sed Rate, ACE Level, ANA, RF, Lung function test, HRCT on chest and sinusus. No cause was found. I have not seen my results but heard them second hand from the Doctors.

I made another appointment with my primary care physician because it seemed they had forgotten about my pain. He sent me for an MRI. I called the office and was only able to talk to the nurse. She asked the doctor what the results were and called me back. She said that it showed inflamation and bulging at the 3rd and 4th vertebrae. she called in a prescription for seldane to the pharmacy. It is an anti-inflamatory. She then called me back and said that she mis-understood the doctor. There was NOT bulging at the vertebrae and I should take the script and call for an appointment if there is no improvement.

There has been NO improvement! It seems worse. I have deep pain in my lumbar area, Hips, back of legs, front of thighs, sometimes in my ankles, sometimes in my big toe. The pain is back and forth from one side to the other and sometimes both sides at the same time. I am not stiff in the morning but have increasing pain as the day goes on.

I have two yong children and can't live like this. It is affecting my quality of life and my childrens life. I stay at home thank goodness because it gives me an opprotunity to rest when I need to.

I need some help. What should I be asking my doctors? Should I request a specialist? I have only gotten a diagnosis of interstitial lung disease but no cause. Could the two be related? I thought Lupus but according to the Pulmonologist the ANA was negative. Please Help ME! Thank You So Much for any assistance!!!

Dear Karen:

Sorry to hear about your pain and doctor troubles.  First, saldane is off the market, it was a medication for allergies and is a H1 blocker.  It would have no effect on your back pain.  Radiation pain can be a radiculopathy (spinal nerve problem), nerve facet problem, or polyneuropathy.  Since it moves from side to side, I would think that it would be a radiculopathy, like sciatic nerve problem.  But since I can't examine you or see the MRI I can't tell.  I think that I would see a neurologist if I were you.  Have the MRI (the actual films) with you when you visit the neurologist.

Sincerely,

Sorry to post here but the original was a month ago and there this may not be seen. I had written in about having a bilateral babinski without cause. My brain scan was competely normal which is wonderful!!!! I am very appreciative of my health and all I have. And you were very helpful in my understanding of what it means. I also have a new appreciation for my brain and health if that makes sense.

The strange thing is the headaches are defintely gone but now I have hip/back that is very strange. Its better with rest but I am having aching up and down legs and sometimes bad ache in feet at rest. All I can say is they are weird pains that don't seem to originate from anywhere but no weakness. My hip pain is definitely localized and sore. I see the neuro for what I  was hoping was a last follow up but its not for a month. My doctor thinks maybe pinched nerve but I have to go in this week. It seems a strange coincidence. I guess I am wondering if the babinski can be from lesion/injury of lumbar or thoractic instead of brain/cervical or is that less likely? Could a pinched nerve be responsible for the babinski? And would it keep getting worse? I am sure the neuro can sort it out in a month but I just don't want to mess around with my spine if it is something that may need more immediate attention so I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance if you can get to this question.

Thanks for the information. The Saldane response just speaks to how incompetent my physicians office may be. On three seperate occaisions they told me that Saldane was the brand name for the generic I am taking. The bottle I have says, Piroxicam 20mg. I am going to take your advice and make an appointment with the neurologist. I only hope my insurance, which is managed care, will afford me a qualified one. Thank you again.

KAREN, I have been a Massage therapist for 10 years now, helping people. I went to a Licensed Accredited School in Lapeer Michigan  (Health Enrichment Center) for 2 yrs, and worked there in charge of their workshops for 3 yrs. I do deep tissue work, meaning working WITH the body I work with neuromuscular problems, i am probably more clinical than an average massge therapist. Has anyone muscle tested PSOAS, ILLIACUS muscles on you?  To see if they are balanced in strength?  Sometimes when off balance these very deep low back muscles and hip adductors can really cause havoc. The psoas is a very STRONG muscles that connects to the Femor (bone=-upper leg thigh) and to the lower lumber vertebrae disks. Illiacus can cause hip pain.that moves around down and up.  This is a muscle that is forgotton about often.  It can literally take you over in a bent forward position, so that you have to "Crawl to the Bathroom" per se'.

If it is an uneven pull, and in contraction (spasm) for a long period of time, it can eventually PULL the disk out= ruptured disk time!

If you could find someone with credentials in massage neuromuscular work to check this or a Dr. for you, it might help to release these muscles. Piriformis muscle comes out of the sacrum and the Sciatic Nerve, which is not the same on all people, sometimes that nerve goes through the muscle, sometimes around piriformis, so muscles can pinch nerves also, as with a vertebrae in a fixed position.Sciatica can cause bizzare symptoms also, as this big nerve orginates from the sacrum and is big, goes down the back of your leg, splits into 2 smaller nerves down to the middle of your foot. Worth looking into, maybe will help you

GOOD LUCK TO YOU,

Sincerely

Connie Nelson

My husband, Frank, has had leg pain for years, they say from a protruding disk problem and had cancelled scheduled surgery at the last moment last year.  The leg was better for months, but since suffering a heart attack (caused from a blood clot in the circumflex area) in February, 2000, his leg pain is much worse than ever before.  Nuclear scanning and angiogram indicate only a mild blockage which we were assured would be taken care of with the medicine he has been subscribed since the heart attack. In addition, he has been having very 'dizzy' days, with periods of mild confusion.   My question is - could this severe leg pain be an indication of blood clotting elsewhere, and what testing do you suggest?

I'm experiencing a pain in my left buttock area, which radiates

down my leg, which in turn causes a tingling sensation in my leg

and foot.   What causes this/
