trigeminal neuralgia

I was recently diagnosed with tn and have been on 800 mg of tegretol for a month with little improvement. When does one consider a surgical approach? thanks

Dear Robert:

I think I would either go up on the tegratol or try another medication. I would recommend neurontin as we have had good luck with it. Surgery is usually held out for the last option.

Robert: Very sorry you have joined the ranks of those who suffer with this horrible affliction. If you want to ask questions and find out about just about any treatment, there is a support group and the Trigeminal Neuralgia Asssociation.To join the support group (no charge) send an E-Mail to ***@****. In the body, type the line: SUB TN-L "your name". Everything has been tried by one or more members from magnets to Microvascular Decompressions. People are there with "classical" TN (like me), ATN, ATFP and AD. There is also a new book called "striking Back" available from the TN Association for the newer patient. Any more info, write me @ : stan-***@****.
