Spinal Problems

by Don Harris, Jul 29, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,

my wife have recently recieved her MRI results and i am having some problems understanding what they actually mean the letter reads as follows

The MRI scan of her lumbar spine reveals Spondylitic change particlary within the intervertebral Discs. And that the only form of treatment that would be helpful given the symtoms of pain she has experienced within the past would be the wearing of a Lumbo-Sacral Corset.

She has had this problem ever since a fall. From what we understand is that the discs between the vertebrae in the lower of her back have degenerated and no longer form a cushion.

She is in constant pain and can only walk very short distances and also has trouble sleeping due this problem

Please can you let me know what this actually is and can there be anything done to relieve the pain or cure this and what it is called

Dear Don:

I am sorry that your wife is suffering with pain.  What I think was meant by the statement you provided is that there is silppage of one vertebra onto another, spondylolisthesis.  Not being able to see the film I hope I am understanding your description correctly.  The degree of disc degeneration depends on what the film shows and I have not seen the film.  There are many things one can do to help.  First, rehab with a good rehab specialist and PT to strengthen the area around the vertebrae.  Second, if this doesn't help then maybe the new gluing procedure or microsurgery might help.  Unfortunately, there is no cure for what has happened.  There is only therapy, medication, rehab, and if all else fails, surgery.

I hope your wife will find relief.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
