Disseminating Lyme

I posted a question on the 20 Feb. 2001 Is This MS or? and appreciate your response. At that time it was suggested I be re-tested for Lyme Disease. I located a LLMD and the Western Blot IGG was positive for Lyme. I was initially put on Biaxin 500 mgs. BID and Ceftin 500 mgs. BID for 6 weeks, and now am on 2 gms daily of IV Ceftriaxone. My question is how much CNS repair can I expect at Late Stage, and if any over what period of time. The ceftriaxone is for one month to be followed by three more months of oral antibiotics. This may be changed. I now longer have swollen, painful knees, or the "neurogenic" arm pain, but that went after 4 weeks of oral meds, so I assume it wasn't neurogenic(?) I do not have rapid pulse (120) or high blood pressure now either, or myolclonic jerks.I am experiencing  extreme fatigue at points during the day though. Is this from the meds? I am still experiencing headaches with vomiting (1 1/2 years now) not migraine, and almost always right sided, temporal, jaw, behind right ear. I always have to go to emerg. for morphine and rehydration. Will these eventually let up?  Ido have more energy than before at other times during the day.Is cholystramine useful - only read about it. Thank you for such a terrific service, I will be eternally grateful to CCF.

Dear Tadpole:

There was a long term follow-up in Europe concerning the neurological lyme disease syndromes.  After one year of treatment, 40% of patients still had symptoms, and the authors thought that steriods might be beneficial in this group.  The patients with encephalomyelitis showed steady improvement after antibiotics.  My take is that most of the patients regain full recovery, but there are some that have some sequalae from the disease, even with treatment.  Only time will tell how you will do, I hope that it will with a full recovery.  I have no experience with cholystramine and lyme disease.

Sincerely,

CCF Neuro MD
