Finger movement

by Scotstudent, May 26, 2001 12:00AM
For some time now I have had trouble opening my hands flat. Recently, I have noticed I can not open bottles easily, and my hand at rest has all fingerson or near my palm. To open them more is very uncomfortable, and if I try to hold my hands flat for more than a few seconds, they become tired and painful. The pain ceases when the fingers rest back on my palm.

Do you know what causes this?

Dear Scot:

Sorry that your having problems with you hand.  My best advice is to see a neurologist to get a full examination and evaluation.  There are many diseases that can induce a "claw hand".  These are muscle diseases, systemic diseaes (such as scleroderma, arthritis), congenital abnormalities, etc.  It is best to see someone who can do the proper exam and take a good history.

Sincerely,
