What next?

4mths ago I suddenly experienced impaired sensation over my whole body, like everything was wrapped in cotton wool, dizziness, and generally feeling unwell (not nausea). Saw my doctor, standard neurological responses were normal, standard blood tests normal. Over the next 2wks I also began to get mild headaches all over(not pulsing) then localised severe pain(not pulsing) in a line on the back of my head,up by my right ear, also stiff neck and shoulders. I also began to have episodes- painful wriggling sensations all over my head, with additional confusion and dizziness. These episodes lasted anything from 5mins to 1hr (2or3/wk).Collapsed in pain a month later after a typical episode but with intense pain at the base of my skull and in my arms. 30mins later feelings abated. 2wks later had MRI and lumbar puncture. MRI was clear, lumbar puncture showed elevated protein levels but described as normal. The lumbar puncture caused me severe headaches and back pain for a week. No one has been able to tell me anything conclusive from symptoms-encephelomyelitis possibly? I have never shown any fatigue. I have seen some improvement lately, episodes reduced,no impairment of senstation, but dizziness, headaches and localised pain remain to the extent where I cannot work or lead a normal life. I am not stressed or depressed. Throughout, all tests describe me as normal! Are there any additional checks that you would advise so I can be proactive in suggesting things myself to my neurologist,or do you have any of your own suspicions? Im 28 and was otherwise fit and healthy. Thanks for your time

Sorry to hear about your symptoms, but I'm glad your tests so far have not shown anything serious. Acute encephalomyelitis is typically quite dramatic both in clinical presentation (usually not episodic) and on the spinal tap results with elevated levels of white blood cells. Basilar (meaning artery) or vertiginous migraines are strong possibilities that should be considered. Confusion and dizziness as well as feeling faint prior and/or during a headache are well described with basilar migraines which got their name because they can mimic people who have strokes from basilar artery disease.  There are several treatment options for you in the year 2001 if they are migraines. Also, benign positional vertigo, anemia, thyroid disease, pheochromocytoma (a condition in which your adrenal glands pump out too much adrenaline) should be considered.  Talk to your docs about these things and the possibility of migraine. Best of luck.
