CSF Leak and Surgery

by Jolene, Nov 23, 2001 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with a CSF leak at the T-12 region.  After two blood patches, my severe headache diminished, but did not go away.  My surgeon was confident that he could correct my problem.  After surgery, it was discovered that I had a tear in a diverticula and a thinning in the dura wall.  It was been four weeks since my surgery, and I experience at least one moderate to severe headache daily.  This headache is not positional, and responds to Ibuprofin; however I do not like taking daily medication.  Is this typical post-surgery?  Or will this be pain that I will most likely have the rest of my life?

Sorry to hear about your symptoms. It could represent temporary irritation from the surgery as they were working on nerve sensitive areas (the spinal meninges). Theoretically it should go away with time as the reparative and surrounding areas begin to heal. However, if they should worsen either suddenly or progressively or if other symptoms develop such as weakness or sensory loss, you will of course need to contact your neurosurgeon straight away.  You should tell them anyway what you are experiencing right now.  Best of luck
