Why can't I inflate a balloon?

by bislin, Feb 09, 2002 12:00AM
Since I was a child I have had great difficulty blowing up a balloon.  I have to exhale, close the opening of the balloon, then exhale again until completed.  Is there a medical condition that might be causing this and why type of doctor do I need to consult?

If there are no other accompanying signs/symptoms related to generalized weakness, eye problems, or muscle and nerve abnormalities, then it's unlikely to be neurological. Primary lung problems such as asthma or emphysema can cause problems in exhalation. If you have any breathing problems, consider talking to your primary care doc and go from there.
