Reoccurence rate of Lipomas?

by JMO, Apr 24, 2002 12:00AM
In 1995 I had surgery to reduce a 1 cm lipoma at the 7th & 8th nerves (CP angle).  Is there any data on the recurrence rate of lipomas in the brain?

Thank you.

I did an extensive medical literature search regarding lipomas and did not find any articles specifically addressing the recurrence rate. One problem is that lipomas in this region are very rare. Also, the current neurosurgical recommendations are for INcomplete removal due to the "stickiness" of the tumor to elegant structures in this area and the inherent risk of trying to cut it all out without damaging nearby nerves. However, within some papers that talk about incomplete removal, they reported that patients did well at least 3 years out.

This is a very interesting question and I will continue to keep an eye open for more info. If I find something, I shall add it to this string. Good luck.
