Prolo-injections

Dear doctor, I have a very concering problem with my low back.  I posted on 5-11 but didn't get a reply.  Any advise you could offer me would be very appreciated.  I'm 42yrs old and was active. Now just getting out of a reclined postion and up moving around brings on so many low back and leg symptoms.  Is there a test that could show if ligament or tendon was torn?  What is your feelings on the Prolo-injections for rebuilding ligament?  Is it safe to use near the nerve roots?  Thanks, Darlin

Prolotherapy or proliferative therapy is not an FDA approved therapy for back pain and is not something we recommend. Although there are testimonials scattered throughout the internet that swear up and down that this treatment works, I could not find any research studies done to look at its safety and efficacy in the medical literature. When patients ask us about alternative therapies, we always look at the potential side effects that could be harmful. In this case, injecting an irritant to induce an immune response around the ligaments sounds as if they may be harmful to other delicate structures in the region such as the nerve fibers. I have no experience with this treatment, but cannot recommend it based on the lack of information on safety and benefit.
