Could I have Parkinsons?

by njmom, Jul 19, 2002 12:00AM
I am a 33 yo woman who is experiencing some disturbing symptoms.  They are fasciculations mailnly in my limbs but also in my face and trunk.  I was diagnosed with BFS in 2/01 by a neuro.

Electric shock zaps that were relieved by moving my leg (ceased now)

Rigidity (I think) in my joints.  This concerns me the most.  I have had it for over 1 1/2 years in my arm and legs joints during specific movements but has recently worsened to include my neck when during certain movements when I bend forward.  I noticed that my arm motion is jerky when I shave my legs or if I rock my daughter while sitting and my heels are off of the floor my leg movements are jerky.

Facial action tremor  (my eyelid muscles tremor if I shut my eyes tightly and my lips start to quiver if I purse my lips for a prolonged period of time, etc.).  Due to my BFS, I have also had an eye twitch for a few days at a time that comes and goes. Muscle tremor during some kinds of action (ie holding my legs straight up if I lie on my back) I have also noticed in the past that if I have rested my head on my hands (if I'm sitting backwards on a chair or something) that my chin occasionally tremors. I don't experience any other symptoms.  I have an appt with an MDS in a month but I would like to hear from you if you think this might point to PD.  All that I've heard about Cogwheel Rigidity indicates PD even though some symptoms may not be directly indicative of this.  Also, this all started happening to me around the same time that I was taking Aldomet for hypertension for 4 mos.  I stopped in 12/00.  Thanks!

Doesn't sound like a typical case of PD, which is classically characterized by a tremor in the resting position, rigidity (but not in the joints), slowness of movement and imbalance. Cogwheel rigidity is a finding on the physical examination that is hard (or near impossible)to pick up on yourself. Best of luck at your upcoming appointment.

I apologize for the horrendous grammar in my original question.  I did a very bad job of quickly editing my question once I realized that I went way over the character limit.

Thanks very much!

My father has had pd for 8 years and it started much the same way. Wo noticed first, that he shook on one side when he painted. It only affects one side. Good luck.

Thanks very much for the reply.  The "rigidity" that I am referring to is definitely even on both sides.  You've provided me with a little more sanity to get me to the neurology consultation.  Thanks again.

HI, I am a 35 yr old white male.  I have a twin sister and she is having some shaking problems.  We both have some shaking in the hands, mine I know is from caffine.  A few days ago she started shaking in her arms, and it worsened when she stood and closed her eyes.  Her arms dont shake all the time, but I am very worried about her shaking.  We both smoke, drink in moderation and occasionally use over the counter diet pills.  The arm jerking and shaking is what is really bothering me.  Any of you have any ideas?  Thanks to you all
