FASCICULATIONS

by concrete, Aug 13, 2002 12:00AM
GOOD MORNING,

I WILL TRY TO ASK ONLY A FEW QUESTIONS I THINK WILL NOT ONLY HELP PUT MY MIND TOEASE BUT HOPEFULLY MANY OTHERS.

I AM THE SAME GUY THAT BENCH PRESSES 500LBS.

AGAIN SORRY FOR THAT MISTAKE.

YOU TOLD ME BASED ON MY INFORMATION IT WAS EXTREMELY UNLIKELY I HAD ALS.

THAT MADE ME FEEL SO GREAT.

MY QUESTIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. IS IT STILL OK THAT MY EMG WAS TAKED AFTER ONLY 2-3 MNTHS AFTER TWITCHES STARTED, IS THIS ENOUGH TIME PAST TO TELL OF ALS.

AGAIN I HAVE ABSOULTLY NO WEEKNESS IF ANYTHING I HAVE GOTTEN STRONGER OVER THE PAST 3 MO. WITH LOTS OF WORKOUTS?

2.DO FASICS GENERALY ONLY START.. (AFTER WEEKNESS).IN ALS

3.IF YOU HAVE FASICS WITH NO WEEKNESS IS (ALS) ALMOST COMPLETLY EXCLUDED.ALONG WITH A NORMAL NEEDLE EMG?

4.EVEN WITH THE PRESENCE OF ALMOST CONSTANT TWITCHES, IS IT SAFE TO SAY WITH ALS THEY WOULD NOT GET MORE INTENCE AT TIMES THEN SO MILD YOU CAULD SEE THEM ONLY UNDER BRIGHT LIGHT BUT SOMETIMES NOT FEEL THEM.I GUESS THE QUESTION IS IN ALS IS THE DESEASE VERY PROGRESSIVE, NEVER GETS BETTER AT TIMES.?

5.I READ A STUDY FROM THE MAYO CLINIC ,IT SAID QUOTE:IN CONCLUSION, IF THE PHYSICAL EXAM. IS NORMAL, AND EMG STUDIES ARE NORMAL,THE PATIENT CAN BE REASSURED OF A COMPLETELY BENIGN PROGNOSIS. DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS. THANK TOU AGAIN.

1.Yes, should be.

2.Generally speaking, yes.

3.Generally speaking, yes.

4.You are talking about two different things, fasciculations and ALS. Fasciculations themselves can be light or intense, but ALS itself (the entire disease spectrum of weakness and muscle wasting, not just the fasciculations) is a progressive disease.

5,Yes

Please read the comment that I posted after your 8/11/2002 question. My husband & I are freaked out too!

Please keep in touch with me about your situation. I am seeing a neuromuscular specialist recommended by my neuro. I'll let you know if he has other thoughts.

It's not my husband with the medical symptoms, it's me (lucky me!). Seeing a neuromuscular specialist tomorrow. Keep "you all" posted.

Many people twitch and it is usually benign. I invite you to join other twitchers at the MGH neurology web forums (just put MGH forums into your browser) and go the topic NEUROMUSCULAR. You will have to register a posting name and password first. You will find many people with the same problems, fears and much friendship and good advice. You may also want to check out http://www.nextination.com/aboutbfs/
