What do my symptoms mean?

by Barehide1, Nov 18, 2002 12:00AM
I have pins and needles sensation on top and at the back of my head, have occassional headaches and the back of my neck hurts.

I also get lightheaded and nauseous about once or twice a week. Do you have any idea what could be wrong or do you need more information?

A complete review of your clinical history, concurrent medical problems, and medication list as well as a formal neurological exam are essential in making an accurate diagnosis. However, from the brief description of your symptoms a number of possibilities come to mind. Migraine or tension headaches and cervical spine disease such as a disc problem can present with similar symptoms. Previous history of trauma to the head/neck or side effects of medications are also possibilities. Talk to your primary care doc about your symptoms at your next visit. Or if the symptoms worsen, you may need to consider a visit to the ER. Good luck.

Back in August, I was rushed to emergancy after developing (very quickly) a headache, and a numb right side. Disorientation and confusion followed. They did a CT scan, and found a small cyst. The admitted me into the hospital, and followed me up by giving me an MRI, where they found two small spots of inflamation. About a week later, still in the hospital, still disoriented and still having a headache, they did another MRI and an MRA, where they found the cyst and inflamation were still present. They determined that the cyst was probably just the way my brain grew and wasn't a cyst at all, and that the inflamation should be tested with an LP. I never got the LP done, and today, nearing the end of november, i still have the symptoms, and have been told by 2 doctors that it is just migraines, and told by another that i should be tested for MS. It appears to me, that this is not migraines, and that they don't know what it is. I am very frustrated. I cannot work, because when i get tired i slur my words, and am dizzy. When i walk too much, I lose the strength in my leg and find it hard. I cannot walk up stairs without the support of my arms to pull me up. I see things like they are 3D and am dizzy a lot. I lost my ability to orgasm, and suffer from headaches almost every day, but not headaches that light and noise effect. I am very confused and would like to give as much information as possible, in hopes of an answer... any help would be great... thank you.

Dear Melissa,

You mentioned an MRI of your head - have they done one of your spine?  I don't want to try to diagnose your complex problem, but the symptoms you describe seem like they warrant a little more investigation.  I wonder where exactly the cyst is.  The problem you describe - determining if something is a cyst vs. a variant of how the brain is formed - has come up with other patients.  The thing is that you're having a lot of symptoms that could potentially point to that area of the nervous system (again, depending on where the cyst is), so one just wonders if that whole issue could be reevaluated.  MS can show up as many of the symptoms you describe, but the whole issue of the headache as the initial symptom makes one wonder about some other possibilities.

Just so you know, the neurologists who answer these questions will not see questions posted within questions (like yours).  To have your full story evaluated by the neurologists on this site, you need to start a new question altogether.

Good luck,

Annika

I have had headaches since I was little. I'm 27 now and for the past two years, the headaches have turned into migraines. I'm on Midrin and Celexa (an SSRI) which have been working okay as long as I catch the migraine in time. I've just recently realized that my headaches have been coming from a cyst-like growth on the back of my neck on the right side(Where my skull meets my neck). I've known that I've had this cyst since I was about ten years old. It hurts sometimes and other times it's fine. When it hurts it sticks out. It's small, about the size of a dime I think. But when it starts hurting, my headaches follow soon after. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?
